My brother and I spent most of the afternoon today going through all of our Lego sets from our childhood. It was quite the scene on our parents’ dining room table as we separated all of the blocks, the mini-figures, the multitude of tires, and the horses. I got more excited the more I discovered different pieces of sets that I had totally forgotten about.
The time spent with Reid today reminded me of times we’d spend playing when we were growing up. While we reminisced about all of the fun we had with the pirate ships, dinosaurs, and vehicles, my dad and Elias played Lego basketball. Linnea had fun assembling some of the mini-figures.
I really loved the time hanging out with my family. I am thankful that holidays are always enjoyable. We love playing games, eating good food, and telling stories. It’s common for aunts and uncles, cousins, or my grandma to be at any of the holidays. There is time to do stuff and time to relax.
That’s not always the case with everyone, and it might not be the case for you. Today might’ve been really stressful, not knowing how time spent with family might go. Today might also be really sad as you spend time away from family that you want to spend time with.
And today might be something you wish you didn’t have to go through, since today might’ve been the “first, second, or …” Thanksgiving without someone you love. I see your tears and hear the heartache because I feel it too. As I thought about the fun that I had looking at my Legos, I also thought about how I never got to share them with Anders. Any family picture that we take on holidays doesn’t show our complete family.
But today, even in that pain, my family was there for me as well.
Whether it was a good Thanksgiving or a difficult one, we all have things we can be thankful for. I am thankful that I have an amazing family. I am thankful that my wife and kids are my favorite humans. I am thankful for the great friends that are walking this life with me.
But most of all, I am thankful that Jesus came down to earth, lived a sinless life, died on the cross for the sins of mankind, and came back to life. There is eternal hope present in the Gospel.
For God So Loved the World
16 “For God so loved the world,[a] that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
- John 3:16-17
