For as long as I can remember, I’ve been so grateful for the brave men and women serving in our armed forces. My grandpa served during the Korean War. Cousins have served in the military. My uncle is a veteran. Friends from high school and college have enlisted and served. Coworkers have served.
When I first started officiating football in Bismarck-Mandan I spent time as a sub every week. During my second season, I subbed on a crew that had three active or former military men. I spent hours sitting in the back of a car listening to the three of them speaking a language completely foreign to me.
What I learned over the thousands of miles and dozens of hours spent with these men is that serving in the armed forces is a sacrifice. They shared details of their deployments and stories from overseas. But more impactful than that was their talk of being away from their family and friends. They spent months away from their wives and kids.
To all of you, thank you for what you’ve done and what you do. Your service to this country is a sacrifice that we all should thank you for.
Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. - John 15:13
